Barcelona Implements €600 Subsidy for Electric Mopeds
Barcelona has announced a €600 subsidy for the purchase of electric mopeds, a move aimed at promoting sustainable transportation and reducing carbon emissions in the city. This initiative is part of a broader Climate Plan that intends to cut CO₂ emissions by over one million tonnes within five years.
The subsidy is specifically available for L1e-B electric mopeds, which have a top speed of up to 45 km/h. To qualify for this financial assistance, applicants must provide proof of scrapping a petrol- or diesel-powered moped.
This program is set to run until 2030, reflecting Barcelona’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The city plans to invest nearly €3 million over the next four years to expand a battery-swapping network for mopeds and motorcycles, enhancing the infrastructure for electric vehicles.
With a population of approximately 1.73 million residents, Barcelona currently has around 32,000 registered mopeds, of which about 8,000 are electric. The introduction of this subsidy is expected to encourage more residents to transition to electric options.
In addition to the moped subsidy, Barcelona intends to invest €1.8 billion in various climate mitigation and adaptation measures by 2030. This investment is part of a larger strategy to promote public health and facilitate a just ecological transition.
In recent news, OSCAL showcased its latest innovations at the Mobile World Congress 2026 held in Barcelona from March 2-5, 2026, highlighting the city’s role as a hub for technological advancements.
On the sports front, Barcelona faced a setback as they lost to Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final, despite a strong performance. Prior to this match, Barcelona had won every home match in the 2025/26 season, demonstrating their competitive spirit.
As the city moves forward with its electric moped initiative, observers will be watching closely to see how these measures impact both the environment and the local economy.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific uptake of the subsidy and its effectiveness in reducing emissions in the coming years.
