Barcelona Implements New Electric Moped Subsidy
As of March 1, 2026, Barcelona has introduced a €600 subsidy for residents purchasing electric mopeds. This initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to promote sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions.
To qualify for the subsidy, applicants must provide proof of scrapping a petrol- or diesel-powered moped. This program is set to run until 2030, reflecting Barcelona’s commitment to transitioning towards cleaner modes of transport.
In addition to the subsidy, Barcelona plans to invest nearly €3 million over the next four years to expand a battery-swapping network for mopeds and motorcycles. This investment is part of the city’s Climate Plan, which aims to allocate €1.8 billion towards climate mitigation and adaptation measures by 2030.
Barcelona, home to approximately 1.73 million residents, currently has around 32,000 registered mopeds. Of these, only about 8,000 are electric, while around 24,000 still rely on combustion engines. The new subsidy is expected to incentivize more residents to switch to electric alternatives.
Barcelona’s Climate Plan is designed to prioritize public health and promote a just ecological transition, with the goal of reducing CO₂ emissions by over one million tonnes within five years.
In a related event, OSCAL showcased its latest innovations at the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona from March 2-5, 2026, highlighting the city’s role as a hub for technological advancements.
On the sports front, Barcelona faced Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final second-leg match, having previously won every home match in the 2025/26 season. However, despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Barcelona lost to Atletico Madrid in this crucial encounter.
As Barcelona continues to push forward with its sustainability initiatives, the effectiveness of the subsidy program and the expansion of the battery-swapping network will be closely monitored by both residents and environmental advocates.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term impact of these measures on the city’s transportation landscape.
