The CBS News 24/7 streaming service faced significant disruptions as employees staged a 24-hour walkout, protesting the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement. The walkout commenced at 6 a.m. ET and is set to conclude at 6 a.m. ET on Wednesday, marking a critical moment for the network amid ongoing negotiations.
Staff members, who are part of the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE), took to the streets, demonstrating outside the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City and KPIX-TV in San Francisco. This action underscores the urgency of their demands for essential work protections and fair wages.
The union has been in discussions with CBS News’ parent company, Paramount Skydance, for an updated agreement. However, the last contract negotiation failed on March 9, prompting the current walkout as a necessary measure to achieve a fair contract.
During the walkout, CBS News 24/7 did not begin live programming until 11 a.m. ET, highlighting the impact of the staff’s absence. WGAE members have expressed concerns about job security and political influence, especially in light of ongoing merger developments involving major media entities.
Notably, 95% of WGAE members signed a strike pledge, emphasizing the seriousness of their demands. “CBS News 24/7 journalists are walking off the job on both coasts today because management refuses to agree to a new contract with essential work protections and fair wages,” stated the WGAE.
In response, a CBS News spokesperson remarked, “We continue to negotiate in good faith and hope to reach a fair resolution quickly.” This statement reflects the company’s commitment to resolving the dispute, although the timeline for a resolution remains uncertain.
Beth Godvik, the WGAE vice president of broadcast, cable, and streaming news, criticized the disparity between Paramount’s financial capabilities and the treatment of its workers. “Paramount has billions to spend acquiring Warner Bros. Discovery, but still hasn’t guaranteed fair wages and basic job protections for the workers who make their streaming operation run,” she noted.
As negotiations continue, the future of CBS News 24/7 remains uncertain amid these developments. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps in the bargaining process and the potential for further actions by the union.
